On my way to work this morning, I saw a flyer advertising a summer camp. Camp Diva. According to the flyer, this camp will teach tween girls how to do manicures, pedicures, facials, and apply their make up. Oh and while attending the camp they will have an opportunity for “girl talk”. At the bottom of the flyer it said something along the lines of “we are a camp focused on empowering girls while teaching them about their inner beauty”. Inner beauty? Really, that’s what you are teaching these girls? Empowering manicures?
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good manicure and wearing dresses and heels. I LOVE that stuff. And I can’t wait to do it with my daughter. And I might even think that a spa day or a camp spa day would be fun for her, but please don’t try and disguise it as something more than that. I hope my daughter never thinks that the colour of her nails will help to define her as a strong and successful person.
